Malta has a sun-bleached limestone interior which is broken up by pretty honey-coloured villages, while the coastline in some parts rocky has some lovely sandy beaches. Known as much for its glorious sunshine as its heroic past, Malta offers a lot more than fabulous weather, Mediterranean fish which come into season amid much celebration in late summer. Not to be missed is the old capital of Mdina, with its 700-foot citadel towering into the sky. The walled city of Valletta boasts a Grand Harbour and marvellous bastions and fortresses.
