You\u2019re on holiday. Are\nyou somewhere familiar or have you travelled to a more far-flung destination? Do\nyou see yourself more likely to be topping up your tan or climbing up a steep\nmountain? You\u2019re hungry and it\u2019s 9am local time \u2013  will you be tucking\ninto an English breakfast or treating yourself to something unusual like h\u00e1karl\n(fermented shark)?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chances are where you\u2019re from in the UK will shape how you respond to all of the above. You see, courtesy of a little survey we recently carried out, we\u2019ve discovered that some cities in the UK are more adventurous than others. Read on to find out more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

London pips Birmingham to be crowned most adventurous city in the UK<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There you have it.\nIt\u2019s official. When it comes to holidays, London is the most adventurous city\nin the UK. Nipping at its heels in second place is Birmingham, with Bristol not\ntoo far behind in third place. Rounding off the top five are Edinburgh and\nSheffield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We found that the\nnation\u2019s capital consistently scored well against our adventurousness assessment\ncriteria, whether it\u2019s a willingness to try an extreme sport or activity when\non holiday \u2013 London was second overall, behind Belfast \u2013 or being up for sampling\n\u2018local delicacies\u2019 (the capital came in fourth overall). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That sense of\nadventure is something that Londoners are all too aware of, with 61% of\nrespondents to our survey saying that they believe themselves to be adventurous\non holiday. Only holidaymakers from Birmingham (63%) and Sheffield (62.5%) are\nmore sure of this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And while Londoners\nare most up for what might seem like one of the least extreme activities you\ncan do when on holiday \u2013 hiking (28%) \u2013 they nevertheless do show an\nappetite for more thrilling activities, such as swimming with sharks (21%) and\nsky diving (21%). Nine percent said they\u2019d even try base jumping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Liverpool takes the title of least adventurous city in the UK \u2013 which is not a bad thing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019re more likely\nto find holidaymakers from Liverpool enjoying all the perks that come with an All Inclusive holiday<\/a>, than engaged with more hair-raising and\nheart-thumping exploits like hang gliding or caving. All Inclusive, you see, is\nthe preferred holiday choice of Liverpudlians (55%), followed closely by beach\nholidays (54%) and city breaks<\/a> (49%). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, to be clear, being\nnamed the least adventurous city in the UK isn\u2019t a bad thing. Nor is it\nsomething that folk in the city are going to lose any sleep over \u2013 it\u2019s\njust not their gig. Even by their own admission, they\u2019re not that into seeking\nthrills and spills when away, with only 39% of respondents from Liverpool describing\nthemselves as being adventurous when on a break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The kind of\nholidays that Liverpudlians are more interested in are those that can be\ndescribed as being laid-back. For example, when asked what stops them being\nadventurous on holiday, most respondents replied that it\u2019s simply down to what\nthey prefer doing on their travels \u2013 which is to relax (45%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Food, however, is\nan interesting one, and somewhat bucks the city\u2019s penchant for \u2018playing it\nsafe\u2019. Our survey found, for instance, that when on holiday Liverpudlians\noverwhelmingly prefer to eat local food (31%) over British grub (6%). Although,\nthat said, it\u2019s important to note that the number one choice is in fact a mix\nof both (42%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which nicely leads\nus on to the next section \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Norwich most adventurous city for trying out local delicacies on holiday<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Despite thinking of\nthemselves as being unadventurous holidaymakers (41%), respondents from Norwich\nare most up for tasting all sorts of weird and wonderful local delicacies on\nholiday. Only 30% said they wouldn\u2019t try exotic foods, whether that\u2019s tequila\nworms or mountain oysters (yeah, us neither).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In terms of what\nthey\u2019re most up for trying \u2013 or indeed, have tried \u2013 on holiday, crocodile\ncame in first (33%), followed by frog legs (32%) and, in joint third, snails\nand kangaroo (30% respectively). Yep, kangaroo. We didn\u2019t even know that was a\nthing, along with \u2018cat poop\u2019 coffee, crispy tarantulas and fried rattlesnake.\nWho\u2019d have thought, eh?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second most adventurous city for wolfing down the kind of dishes you won\u2019t find yourself rustling up on an average Wednesday evening back at home is Bristol, with travellers from the city more likely to be giving raw fish (34%) and crocodile (26%) a go. Holidaymakers from third place Edinburgh, meanwhile, are most up for chowing down raw fish (29%), snails (27.5%) and frog legs (27.5%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More generally,\nBrits are, somewhat surprisingly, up for tasting unusual local dishes when on\nholiday. Only 41% said they wouldn\u2019t entertain any of the options presented to\nthem in the survey \u2013 which we completely get. A century-old egg or stink\nbugs (whatever they are), for example, gets the thumbs down from the Broadway\nTravel team!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anyway, we digress. The willingness of Brits to try local delicacies has to be taken in context \u2013 it\u2019s clear from our results that the so-called more exotic dishes that respondents are willing to try on holiday are arguably the least extraordinary ones, such as raw fish\/sushi (29%), snails (23%) and frog legs (21%). Still, rounding off the top five were kangaroos (20%) and crocodiles (19%). And they\u2019re pretty unusual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Holiday preference and lack of confidence put Brits off being adventurous<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The reason that\ntravellers gave for not being adventurous on holiday is interesting. For many, it\nhas nothing to do with stumbling blocks, such as language barriers or not\nfeeling fit or strong enough for certain physical activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nope. For a considerable number of respondents it\u2019s more about what they want to do on holiday. And for 30% of Brits, it\u2019s to relax. That\u2019s especially true for holidaymakers from Liverpool (45%), Glasgow (41%), Edinburgh (38%) and Newcastle (34%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For others, the\nbiggest hurdle is confidence. We found, for instance that 24% of respondents\ncite a lack of confidence as the main reason for not being adventurous on\nholiday, whether it\u2019s signing up to do an extreme activity or consuming a dish\nthat is as unusual as they come. For cities like Norwich (32%) and Newcastle\n(30%), it\u2019s a big barrier, but less so for travellers from Belfast (18%) and\nNottingham (19%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elsewhere, it\u2019s all\ndown to who respondents find themselves on holiday with. According to our survey,\n15% of Brits are held back from all sorts of white-knuckle, heart-in-mouth adventures\nbecause their travel buddies are not up for participating in an extreme sport\nor activity \u2026 much to their disappointment!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
