Mahon holidays

One of the main delicacies in this portside city is Mahon cheese. This creamy yet salty cheese is best served in its traditional form – thinly sliced and drizzled with olive oil. It’s easily identifiable by its wax coating and is served in restaurants, cafes and can be brought from the city markets. There’s also a large fish market in Mahon where you can pick up freshly caught seafood from prawns to lobster and all sorts of fish.

There are not many beaches in Mahon as its shoreline is predominantly made up of rugged cliffs and a large harbour. But, the nearest is Sa Mesquida Playa. It’s an isolated beach on the eastern coast. Its large swath of sand is slightly shadowed by the Morro de Tramuntana rocky landscape. Visit this beautiful beach for a relaxed atmosphere. On the southern coast, Punta Prima Beach is where you can recline on the soft, white sand and paddling in the shallow waters as they wash up to the shore. From here you can watch the boats on the horizon and relax in the picturesque setting.

Explore the harbour: Take a water taxi or a boat cruise through the water to admire the pretty, colourful colonial buildings and to view the boats that dock in the harbour. As well as small fishing boats, large cruise ships and lavish catamarans regularly use the harbour which means there’s plenty to view and admire when relaxing in the waterside cafes.

Mola Fortress: For peace and quiet away from the bustling centre, travel towards the coast to the imposing fort that looms over the harbour. The 19th-century military barracks are expansive with a unique defensive system. With the polygonal entrance, the large moat and a separated hornwork in its centre, the Mola Fortress could be protected from the sea and the land. Visit to see this impressive structure, its huge cannons and to find out more about the importance of its position throughout history.

Museo de Menorca: Located in a baroque building by the harbour, the Museo de Menorca is a fantastic museum, brimming with local history. Unearth the mysteries of the archaeological artefacts that are on display and learn more about the fascinating regional heritage. With exhibits focusing on the Roman, Byzantine and Islamic time periods, there’s a lot to discover. Taken from the 18th and 20th centuries there’s also a lot of art to admire including sculptures, paintings and maps.
