This may be the largest of the Canary Islands but you can actually travel across it within a couple of hours, making it easy to discover the whole island.

You’ll find a wide range of activities in Tenerife. One day you could be partying at Santa Cruz Carnival – the second largest carnival in the world after Rio de Janeiro – the next, you’ll be spotting whales off the south west coast including killer, baleen and blue whales. Then you can visit the Thai-themed Siam Park, Europe’s biggest waterpark.

Explore the Historical Former Capital La Laguna

The island’s former capital, San Cristóbal de La Laguna, is one of two UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Tenerife. It’s home to many of the island’s major religious buildings including the neoclassical cathedral.

Walk the streets of this ancient city and discover the colonial architecture including the palaces of Nava and Salazar and the convents of Santa Catalina and Santa Clara. You’ll also find the Museum of the History of Tenerife here.

Climb Spain’s Tallest Peak

The second UNESCO World Heritage Site is Teide National Park which is home to Mount Teide – a volcanic crater with a 30-mile circumference that dominates the centre of the island.

A visit to this national park will begin on the sunny coastline and take you through the clouds up to the most incredible lunar landscape. At 3,718 metres above sea level, Mount Teide is Spain’s tallest peak – a cable car takes you to the often snow-capped summit.
