There are certain attractions in Rome that simply can’t be missed. The most famous and well-known is the Colosseum, the largest ancient amphitheatre in the world. Step back in time as you wander through this magnificent stadium, first used to host gladiator battles and other forms of gruesome entertainment. Completed in 72 AD, the Colosseum held up to 50,000 spectators – enough to fill most football stadiums in Italy today. Another impressive symbol of ancient Rome is the Pantheon, a former Roman temple and since 609 AD, a Catholic church. Once inside, you’ll note the famous domed ceiling which remains the world’s largest unreinforced concrete structure to this day. Gaze up at the oculus, an opening in the ceiling which lets natural light into the temple – an enchanting sight on sunny days.

Don’t forget to visit the Sistine Chapel, one of the Vatican Museum’s most beautiful buildings. During the rebuild of the chapel in 1477, Botticelli and Rosselli decorated the walls and ceilings in jaw-dropping artwork. Then, in 1503 Michelangelo worked on the chapel’s ceiling for 4 years making it the masterpiece it is today – a must-see on your Rome itinerary.

Famous landmarks: With ancient buildings and beautifully lit-up streets around every corner, you can see many of Rome’s iconic landmarks for free just be exploring the city on foot. If you’re an avid people watcher, don’t miss a visit to the Spanish Steps, an iconic landmark of Rome made famous through classic films including Roman Holiday. If you’re travelling in April, you’ll find the steps covered from top to bottom in pink azalea flowers to celebrate the city’s anniversary.

Piazza Navona: Another top free attraction is the Piazza Navona, a large, historical square in the heart of Rome. Decorated with beautiful fountains, visit in the evening to see the square lit up under the night sky –a magical sight. While it’s free to see Piazza Navona, you might want bring some cash, since the markets surrounding the square are perfect for a bit of souvenir shopping.

Trevi Fountain: Just 1km way from Piazza Navona, you’ll find Trevi Fountain, one of Rome’s greatest attractions. This 18th Century fountain is the ideal romantic destination for couples. It’s free to admire the beauty of the fountain but remember to bring some coins if you want to make a wish!

Vatican: There’s plenty to do with the kids in Rome from fun-filled activities to ancient sites that will amaze and inspire. For budding historians and art enthusiasts, there’s so much to see at the Vatican Museums. With 54 museums filled with famous Roman sculptures and Renaissance masterpieces, book a private family tour and delve into the endlessly fascinating collections.

Villa Borghese: Next up, take in the beauty of Villa Borghese. This landscaped park is the third largest national park in Rome and you can see it on foot, by renting bicycles, or on a guided tour. For little ones, San Carlino Puppet Theatre is located at the northern end of the park. The theatre holds about 2-3 shows a month, with plenty of belly laughs for kids.

Gladiator School: Make your aspiring gladiator’s dreams come true by enrolling them in the Gladiator School of Rome! With training given by top instructors, it’s a great way for kids to immerse themselves in history whilst having fun. Along with training sessions, the school houses a gladiator museum, offering a fascinating glimpse into the lives of these ancient Roman warriors.
