Sardinia holidays

Sardinia is one of those places that feels like it was made for holidays. This stunning Italian island is famous for its jaw-dropping coastline – think powder-soft white sand, turquoise waters that wouldn't look out of place in the Caribbean, and hidden coves just waiting to be discovered. Whether you're after a lazy beach break or a spot of snorkelling in crystal-clear seas, Sardinia delivers in spades.

But there's so much more to the island than beaches alone. Head inland and you'll find rugged mountains, ancient hilltop towns and ruins dating back thousands of years, including the mysterious Nuraghi – Bronze Age stone towers found nowhere else on earth. Foodies are in for a treat too, with hearty, rustic cuisine featuring fresh seafood, wild boar and some seriously good local wines.

Popular spots include the glitzy Costa Smeralda, a playground for the jet-set with its designer boutiques and superyacht-lined marinas, while Cagliari, the island's charming capital, offers a more laid-back mix of history, colourful streets and buzzing café culture. Wherever you end up in Sardinia, you're guaranteed sunshine, scenery and a proper taste of la dolce vita.

Food & drink in Sardinia

Taking inspiration from both Spain and Italy, Sardinian cuisine offers a unique combination of flavours. Seafood is plentiful and fresh, making it a popular accompaniment to side dishes. Bottarga is particularly famous and simply must be sampled while in Sardinia. Rather than being the main dish, this is a cured block of dried grey mullet or tuna roe which is then grated over pasta or sliced as a starter. Fregola is a particularly popular Sardinian dish, and it’s not hard to see why. While it has the appearance of giant couscous, it’s actually semolina pasta dough. The dough is hand-rolled into small balls and toasted in the oven, giving it a chewy texture similar to gnocchi. Fregola is most often paired with more traditional Italian dishes and sauces, although you’ll also find it in salads or stews. If you’ve already sampled too much pasta, then try panadas. These Sardinian pies are full of flavour and baked to perfection, plus you can find a filling that satisfies pretty much any palette. While the traditional filling is lamb, you can also find vegetarian and beef panadas, as well as plain cheese.

Things to do in Sardinia

Once you’re ready to step off the beach, head to one of these intriguing attractions to see another side to Sardinia.

Hike in Sardinia’s mountains: Sardinia offers more than just beaches; it’s practically a playground for outdoor explorers. If you’re the type of person who enjoys engulfing themselves in nature, you’re in luck. Hiking is a popular activity in the more rural parts of Sardinia due to the incredible terrain and inherent beauty. Rocky, tree-topped mountains can be found throughout the island, although Gola Su Gorropu is by far the most popular. Nicknamed ‘Europe’s Grand Canyon’, it offers dramatic views and natural splendour. It’s a steep and long hike, so you should go on a group trekking tour if you aren’t used to managing such rocky terrain.

Sardinia’s grottoes: You’ll have plenty of fun exploring the cities of Sardinia, but there’s hidden beauty to be found on the island. Head to Neptune’s Grotto, a cave located near the town of Alghero. Named after the Roman God of the sea, Neptune’s Grotto is hidden cosily between seaside cliffs. Step inside this cave to see some of the most eerily beautiful natural formations, including hanging stalactites and a huge underground lake.
